While Catawba Indians were the first people to call this area home, Fort Mill was formally established in 1873 and gets its name from a combination of a colonial-era fort and a grist mill. Textile mills helped the village of settlers grow into a community rapidly in the 1800’s. Fort Mill is home Confederate Park, containing the nation’s only monument to slaves fighting on the Confederate side of the

American Civil War as well as other historical sights.

The Spratt House, a former bank originally constructed in 1911, is named after Thomas Spratt and his wife, Elizabeth, who were among the earliest colonial settlers in the region traveling by wagon in the Carolinas. According to the town web site, the Spratts spent a night among the friendly Catawba Indians and were invited to stay and live in the area on a large tract of land given to them. Their descendants still live here today!
